Today is the final day for early voting ahead of Tuesday’s primary election in Walker County. Voters can cast their ballot today at the Walker County Elections Office in LaFayette and at the Rossville Municipal Civic Center. All polling locations across Walker County will be open on Tuesday for Election Day. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Two people were arrested Wednesday in Walker County on methamphetamine charges. According to jail records, 70-year-old Charles Franklin Robertson was charged with felony possession of meth, along with motor vehicle violations. The Walker County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing next month on a proposal to abandon part of Concord Road in LaFayette. The section under consideration is located between Albert Thomas Drive and the Trans America Trail. The hearing is set for Thursday, June 4th at 6:30 p.m. at the Walker County Courthouse Annex Four building on South Duke Street. County officials will hear public comments before taking any action on the request.
Governor Brian Kemp has signed a new law expanding access to medical cannabis in Georgia. The “Putting Georgia’s Patients First Act” adds lupus to the list of qualifying conditions and removes some severe illness requirements for patients seeking a medical cannabis card. The law takes effect July 1st. Recreational marijuana remains illegal in Georgia.
May is National Water Safety Month. The American Red Cross says drowning remains one of the leading causes of death for young children and people under 30 — and it can happen silently in less than a minute. The Red Cross encourages parents to closely supervise children around water, never swim alone, and always use proper life jackets.
