According to the City of LaFayette, in January, Eagle Scout candidate Halen Poole,(local Boy Scout Troop 1), proposed a project to the LaFayette City Council to create artificial fish habitats at the Queen City Lake. The underwater structures mimic natural features like stumps, trees, limbs, and brush, giving fish a safe place to lay eggs, smaller fish a hiding spot from predators, and young fish room to grow. They also attract larger game fish looking for food and the structures are designed to avoid snagging fishing lines.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources installed 2,000 fish attractors across the state, with studies showing they help improve lake ecosystems. Halen’s plan includes building and installing eight fish habitats, along with an outdoor kiosk featuring a map of the underwater structures as an educational exhibit. These kiosks will feature information about the types of fish in Queen City Lake, fishing regulations, and city rules. The City Council approved the project in February and agreed to cover the cost of raw materials to enhance this community resource.
