Ongoing dry conditions have prompted Chattooga County leaders to prohibit outdoor burning until further notice, citing a growing threat of wildfires.
An emergency order issued by Sole Commissioner Andy Allen went into effect at midday Thursday, halting all open burning activities across the county.
Officials say a combination of parched ground, low humidity, and steady winds has created an environment where fires can ignite and spread rapidly. Across Georgia, crews have already battled dozens of wildfires in recent days, and drought conditions in Chattooga County range from moderate to severe.
The restriction covers all outdoor fires, including the burning of leaves, brush, and other debris, as well as recreational fires.
County authorities emphasize the measure is aimed at reducing the risk of uncontrolled fires and protecting homes and residents. The restriction is set to remain in place through May 1, when statewide seasonal burning limitations are scheduled to take effect.
Residents are being asked to avoid any outdoor burning and remain cautious until weather conditions improve.
