In the September City Council meeting, leadership unanimously voted to fund five pickleball courts utilizing SPLOST funds. The outdoor courts will be located at the Main Recreation center at 638 S. Main Street, adjacent to the existing tennis courts.
Our Public Works Department paved the courts last week, kicking off the three-month project. Once the asphalt has cured for at least 30 days, the courts will be topped, lined and netting added, followed by fencing installation. The estimated completion date is late-January.
In the past few years, Pickleball has exploded in popularity. For those unfamiliar with the sport, it’s a bit of a mix between tennis, ping pong, and badminton, played on a small court with paddles and a wiffle ball. Lovers of the sport report that it’s easy to learn, and the smaller court allows for people of all ages to enjoy the game. It’s great for a quick, fun workout.
LaFayette has dozens of residents who are already dedicated players of the game. The game can be played on specially-lined tennis and basketball courts, which is how our Recreation Department has been able to serve these residents over the past few years. But with the growing number of Pickleball fans, and our expanding basketball, volleyball and tennis programs, space has become an issue.
We think these new courts will be a great addition to our ever-expanding Recreation Program, and can’t wait to see how they are utilized this upcoming year.
