Two undefeated teams meet Friday night in Chatsworth as LaFayette travels to Murray County for a Region 7-3A showdown between teams off to their best starts in decades.
The Ramblers and Indians both enter the game at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in region play. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Murray Field.
For LaFayette, the 4-0 start is its first since 1991. A victory would give the Ramblers their first 5-0 start since 1986.
Murray County also has plenty of history on the line. The Indians are 4-0 for the first time since 2001 and could reach 5-0 for the first time since 2000.
The matchup features two teams that rely heavily on the running game, although their offensive approaches are different.
Murray County averages 281 yards rushing per game and has completed only two passes all season, both to running back Bransyn Perry. Perry leads the Indians with 488 rushing yards.
LaFayette also leans on the ground game, with Bryson Penson leading the way with 583 rushing yards. Penson rushed for 167 yards in last week’s victory over North Murray.
The Ramblers have shown more willingness to throw the football, particularly when looking for big plays. Quarterback Layton Overby is 23-of-38 passing for 671 yards, an average of 29 yards per completion.
The winner will strengthen its position as a contender in Region 7-3A, where undefeated Ringgold also remains in the picture.
The series has been a back-and-forth affair historically. LaFayette has won the last six meetings, while Murray County won the previous six. The teams first met in 1950. Their most recent meeting came in 2021, when LaFayette won 28-21.
Friday night’s winner will leave Murray Field with a 5-0 record and an early advantage in the Region 7-3A race.
