Georgia Department of Agriculture is expanding access to affordable spay and neuter services statewide through a record $1.15 million investment in Georgia’s Dog and Cat Sterilization Program Grant.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper announced the funding this week, saying the program is designed to help reduce pet overpopulation, ease overcrowding in shelters, and improve animal welfare across Georgia communities.

The grant program will provide funding support for animal shelters, rescue organizations, and veterinary partners that offer spay and neuter services.

Applications for the program will open Friday, May 15, and remain open through June 15.

Eligible applicants include county or municipal animal shelters licensed in Georgia, licensed nonprofit animal rescue organizations with 501(c)(3) status, and veterinary medical foundations with 501(c)(3) status.

State officials said unlicensed spay and neuter clinics, shelters and rescue groups operating for less than 12 months, and private individuals are not eligible to apply for funding.

Harper called the investment a significant step toward addressing animal overpopulation issues across the state and said the funding will help expand access to critical services in local communities.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture said the grant program is intended to strengthen partnerships between local governments, shelters, rescue groups, and veterinary providers while helping reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats entering shelters.
