Walker County voters helped decide several key races Tuesday as election results rolled in across Georgia, with local and statewide contests now setting the stage for a series of runoff elections next month.
In the Walker County Commission District 1 Republican primary, Randy Pittman claimed victory with more than 57 percent of the vote. The race for a Rossville City Council seat is headed for a runof between Elaine Alder and Shannon Carter.
Several statewide races failed to produce outright winners, sending candidates into June 16 runoff elections.
The Republican race for Governor will continue between Burt Jones and Rick Jackson after neither candidate secured a majority Tuesday night. Jones finished with 38 percent of the vote, while Jackson followed with 33 percent. The winner of the GOP runoff will face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in November’s General Election.
In the Lt. Governor’s race, John Kennedy won the Republican nomination outright. On the Democratic side, John McLauren and Nabilah Parkes advanced to a runoff election.
Both parties will also hold runoff elections for Secretary of State. Republican voters narrowed the field to Tim Flemming and Vernon Jones, while Democrats selected Penny Reynold and Dana Barrett to continue on to next month’s runoff.
The race for Attorney General is now set for November, with Republican Brian Strickland facing Democrat Tonya Miller in the General Election.
In the Republican primary for Georgia House District 14, Clay Fuller posted a commanding victory, earning more than 81 percent of the vote. Fuller will now face Democrat Shawn Harris in November.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s Republican U.S. Senate primary will head to a runoff between Mike Collins and Derek Dooley.
Closer to home, voters in State Senate District 53 gave Lanny Thomas a decisive win, with Thomas capturing 73 percent of the vote.
