In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Georgia motorists are getting a break at the gas pump.

Gov. Brian Kemp announced Tuesday that he is suspending the state’s fuel taxes to help in storm recovery.

Starting today, motorists will not be required to pay the state’s 32.3-cent gas tax or its 36.2-cent diesel tax. The tax break is scheduled to be in place for one week.

The tax break is part of a state of emergency extended by the governor following Hurricane Helene.

Governor Kemp said the emergency declaration is necessary “due to the potential negative impacts” of last week’s storm.

Dade County motorists are already seeing a drop in prices, with a gallon of unleaded regular gas now costing 2.32 in Trenton.

Georgia’s fuel tax exemption expires October 9th.
