LaFayette High School senior Emily Maanum has been named a 2026 Georgia Scholar, one of the highest academic honors awarded to graduating high school students in the state.

The distinction, presented annually by the Georgia Department of Education, recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and community service. Maanum was one of only 162 graduating seniors statewide selected from more than 480 public and private high schools across Georgia.

To earn the designation, students must meet a rigorous set of requirements, including maintaining an unweighted grade-point average of at least 3.75, scoring 31 or higher on the ACT, registering to vote, participating in multiple interscholastic activities, and holding leadership positions both in school and within the community.

According to the Walker County Board of Education, the honor carries no scholarship funding but includes a Georgia Scholar seal on the student’s diploma and statewide recognition for academic excellence.

Maanum’s achievement continues a growing tradition of academic success at LaFayette High School. Over the past three years, the school has produced five Georgia Scholars, highlighting the strength of its advanced academic programs and college-preparatory opportunities.

School officials point to the success of LaFayette High School’s Scholars Program, now in its fourth year, as one factor contributing to those accomplishments. The program was created for students seeking a more rigorous academic experience than the standard diploma track. Since 2024, 89 students have completed the program, with 68 passing at least one Advanced Placement exam.

LaFayette High students have also earned a number of notable academic distinctions in recent years. Joey Hicks recorded the first perfect ACT score in school history, while Anniston Pierce became the first Rambler accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after being named a Horatio Alger National Scholar.

Other recent accomplishments include Sofia Rossi being selected as an Allen Berg Memorial Scholar through the ACE Program and Jeremiah Hart earning a spot in Georgia’s prestigious Governor’s Honors Program.

This spring, Marvin Fuentes made school history by becoming the first LaFayette High senior accepted to two Ivy League universities, receiving admission offers from both Brown University and Columbia University.

Walker County school leaders credited the achievements of Maanum and other high-performing students to the support of teachers, staff members, coaches, club sponsors, and families who help foster a culture of academic excellence throughout the district.

For LaFayette High School, Maanum’s recognition as a Georgia Scholar serves as another milestone in what has become a remarkable period of academic achievement for the school and its students.
