Although Rock City’s proposed gondola transportation project was not included on this week’s agenda for the Lookout Mountain City Council, discussion surrounding public input on the controversial proposal remained a topic during Thursday night’s meeting.
The City Council is expected to make the final decision on whether the project moves forward after the Lookout Mountain Planning Commission recently voted against recommending zoning ordinance changes needed to allow the gondola system.
The proposal would create a transportation link carrying visitors from a planned parking area at the base of Lookout Mountain to Rock City atop the mountain. Supporters of the project, including Rock City leaders, say the system would reduce vehicle traffic along Ochs Highway by redirecting thousands of visitors away from mountain roads.
During Thursday’s meeting, Councilwoman Caroline Williams raised concerns about the timing of public comments submitted to council members ahead of major decisions. Williams suggested establishing a process that encourages residents to provide comments before council meetings rather than waiting until the day of a scheduled vote.
City Manager Kenny Lee later clarified that the suggestion was intended to ensure council members have adequate time to review and consider public feedback before making decisions.
Public interest in the gondola proposal remains high, with residents continuing to express support and opposition during meetings and public hearings.
Opponents of the project have cited concerns about increased visitation, traffic impacts, public safety and the visual effect of gondolas crossing the mountainside.
No action was taken Thursday night regarding either changes to the public comment process or the proposed gondola project.
