In 2022, the City of LaFayette completed a year-long Strategic Plan process that identified connectivity and the overall look of our streets as the top two issues facing our community. Since then, our leadership has been dedicated to addressing these issues strategically and responsibly through targeted revitalization of key Downtown assets along the Villanow Street corridor. By carefully leveraging SPLOST funds and grants, significant changes have already been made to East Villanow, including projects like the Downtown Commons and the current construction of a Gateway Park.
While these Phase 1 projects were being planned and executed, our Team was hard at work securing funds for a larger-scale project to address our significant Villanow Street accessibility needs.
We are thrilled to announce that the City of LaFayette has been awarded a $6.3 million USDOT RAISE grant! This highly competitive federal infrastructure grant will fund the complete revitalization and streetscaping of approximately 1.3 miles of Villanow Street, between Chattanooga Street and Duke Street. The project includes ADA-compliant sidewalks, connecting our Mars District to LaFayette Square, addressing our accessibility needs, and providing countless residents with easier access to employment opportunities, education, healthcare, and community resources. Preparation for the project will begin in 2024 and continue throughout 2025, with physical work anticipated to start in 2026.
This grant and the subsequent project signify a major step forward for LaFayette, demonstrating the city’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its residents.
We would like to thank our elected representatives for their support of this catalytic investment in our downtown and in the future of LaFayette.
