A Trion family is recovering after a more than 60-foot tree crashed through their home during severe weather on the Fourth of July, forcing them from the house they have called home for more than three decades.
The tree fell onto the home while multiple generations of the Gaither and Barker families were gathered inside celebrating Independence Day. Loren Barker said she, her husband and their three children, ages 9, 6 and 2, were sitting in the living room when they heard a loud crash.
The family immediately reacted, shielding the children as the tree came through the house. Despite the extensive damage, no one was seriously injured.
Barker’s father, Norman Gaither, said he and his wife rushed downstairs after hearing the impact and worked to help the family get to safety.
A week after the incident, the family continues to assess the damage while planning the next steps in the rebuilding process. They are currently staying with relatives as repairs begin.
Family members said they have been overwhelmed by support from neighbors, friends and the local community. Gaither also expressed appreciation for former military colleagues who have reached out to offer assistance.
The massive tree has since been removed from the home by Godfrey’s Tree Service, which has also established a donation fund to assist the family during their recovery.
Although much of the home was damaged, the family said they are thankful everyone survived the incident safely and remain focused on rebuilding together.
