At last Thursday night’s Walker County Board of Commissioners meeting covered several topics. Including a discussion among members of the county’s Republican party about vetting candidates for political office. The discussion stems from the controversial move by Catoosa County GOP to try to prevent four candidates from appearing on last month’s primary ballot. Catoosa GOP leaders believed the four who had all been elected before as Republicans and had qualified this year did not represent the party and their position. The four filed lawsuits for access to the primary ballot. Walker County Republican Party Vice President Randy Pittman told board members that the local party had “no intention of vetting candidates.”
Other discussions from Thursday night, local resident Scott McNabb inquired about money that has been set aside for the community center. McNabb said he was told there is $300,000 in SPLOST money for the center. “There are drawing set aside for this project. The money is there, let’s use it!”
Outgoing Commission Chairman Shannon Whitfield said his goal is to get Walker County completely out of debt. When Whitfield was elected to the position 8 years ago, Walker County was drowning in debt. Commissioners praised the job Whitfield has done to get the county back on solid financial footing. A debt free Walker County places them among those in the best financial situation in Georgia.
