Walker County Animal Control officers have located the owner of three severely neglected dogs rescued earlier this week at McWilliams Cemetery, and the animals have now been surrendered to Walker County Animal Shelter (WCAS). Officials say the investigation remains ongoing.

The dogs were discovered Monday morning after animal control officers responded to a report of abandoned animals at McWilliams Cemetery on West Armuchee Road and Smith Gap Road. A concerned citizen had reported seeing three dogs left at the cemetery Sunday evening.

When officers arrived, they found two emaciated dogs running loose through the cemetery, frightened and searching for food. While attempting to safely capture them, officers heard a faint sound coming from a nearby drainage pipe. Upon investigating, they discovered a third dog, extremely weak and severely emaciated, hiding inside the pipe.

Officers later named the dog “Miracle” after her dramatic rescue. Officials say she had likely crawled into the small drainage pipe seeking shelter after being abandoned and was too weak to move on her own. Animal control officers carefully removed Miracle and rushed her to a local veterinary clinic, where she weighed only 10 pounds.

All three dogs are now receiving medical care, food, and attention as they begin the recovery process.

Walker County Animal Control officials say cases like this are becoming increasingly common and are urging residents to seek assistance if they are unable to properly care for their pets. Resources are available for pet owners who need help to prevent situations like this.

Authorities say that although the owner has been identified and the dogs surrendered, the investigation into the severe neglect is ongoing as the animals continue to recover.
