The Cherokee Regional Library System has announced a major expansion of the digital archive for the Walker County Messenger, giving researchers, students and residents access to keyword-searchable editions of the newspaper from 1889 through 1997.

The newly digitized collection extends the archive well beyond its previous endpoint of 1924 and is available free to the public through the Digital Library of Georgia’s Georgia Historic Newspapers collection at gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu .

Lecia Eubanks, director of the Cherokee Regional Library System, called the expansion a major milestone for the community, saying local history should be easy for residents to discover and explore.

Newspapers provide a detailed record of community life, preserving not only major events but also everyday stories such as birth announcements, school achievements, business openings, letters to the editor and other moments that often do not appear in traditional history books.

Library officials said the searchable format makes the archive especially valuable. Genealogists can locate family names, students can research historical events through local coverage, business owners can investigate the history of their properties, and veterans’ families can search for wartime references to relatives.

The project was funded through SPLOST contributions from Walker County Government and the City of LaFayette. Additional support came from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act program administered by Georgia Public Library Service.

According to the library system, plans are already underway to digitize the remaining editions of the Walker County Messenger, with additional work expected next year.

Access: The archive is available free of charge through the Georgia Historic Newspapers collection at gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu .
