The Walker County Animal Shelter is encouraging the community to adopt a pet during the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s nationwide “Empty the Shelters” adoption event, which runs from July 5 through July 26.
Shelter officials say they are in urgent need of adopters after experiencing a significant increase in animal intake. Since reopening to normal operations just 10 days ago, the shelter has taken in 61 new animals, while only 14 have found permanent homes.
To help place more pets with loving families, reduced adoption fees are being offered throughout the event. Dogs and cats older than four months can be adopted for $25, while adoption fees for puppies and kittens four months old and younger have been completely waived.
Every adoption helps create space for another homeless animal in need while easing the burden on the shelter’s kennel technicians, who are currently caring for more animals than ever.
The Walker County Animal Shelter is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Visitors are invited to stop by, meet the available animals, and take advantage of the special adoption fees during the event.
Shelter staff are also asking visitors for patience as employees work to balance caring for the animals with assisting prospective adopters.
Officials say if you’ve been considering adding a pet to your family, now is the perfect opportunity to give a homeless animal a second chance while helping the shelter make room for more pets in need.
