The Walker County Board of Commissioners will meet Thursday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Courthouse Annex IV, located at 201 South Duke Street in LaFayette, with one of the meeting’s most closely watched agenda items being a proposed six-month moratorium on data center development.

Commissioners are scheduled to consider a resolution that would temporarily halt the approval of new data center projects for six months. The proposed moratorium would provide county leaders additional time to review existing regulations and evaluate whether changes to local development policies are needed before future projects move forward.

The issue has drawn significant public attention in recent months as residents have voiced concerns about the potential impact of large-scale data centers on infrastructure, water resources, power usage, environmental issues, and the overall character of the community. Thursday’s meeting could mark an important step in determining how Walker County approaches future data center development.

In addition to the proposed moratorium, commissioners will hold a public hearing on the county’s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget before considering its adoption.

The agenda also includes a public hearing and consideration of an ordinance amending the county’s Land Development Conservation and Development Ordinance, along with several planning and zoning requests involving properties in Chickamauga, LaFayette, and Rossville.

Commissioners are also expected to consider amendments to the county code regulating land development, adoption of the county’s Comprehensive Financial Policy, and a resolution prohibiting county employees from participating in the purchase of county surplus property.

The consent agenda includes appointments to the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library Board, updates to the county’s travel and reimbursement policy, and resolutions authorizing Walker County to serve as the fiscal agent for several grant applications.

Additional business includes the purchase of equipment for the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, emergency repairs to the Walker County Tax Commissioner’s Office, and approval of the sale of certain county-owned real property.

The meeting will conclude with commissioner comments before adjournment.

The July 9 meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at Courthouse Annex IV, 201 South Duke Street in LaFayette. Residents who cannot attend in person can watch the meeting live on Walker County’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
