Extreme Heat Warning in Effect; Walker County Residents Urged to Take Precautions

SHARE NOW

Walker County residents are being urged to limit outdoor activities and take precautions as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for northwest Georgia.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values are expected to reach 108 to 111 degrees during the afternoon and early evening hours, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Extreme heat can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, and those working or exercising outside.

The National Weather Service recommends:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and others who may be vulnerable.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.

Anyone who must work outdoors should take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned area.

Signs of heat stroke include confusion, loss of consciousness, hot and dry skin, or a body temperature above 103 degrees. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and anyone experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a cooler location immediately while 911 is called.

Forecasters say the dangerous heat is expected to continue through the holiday weekend, and residents should continue monitoring the latest forecasts and weather alerts.
