Several Walker County students are among the recipients of scholarships awarded by The Foundation at Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC), which recently distributed 48 scholarships totaling more than $37,000 to 47 graduating high school seniors across northwest Georgia.
Among the Walker County recipients of the Foundation’s High School Graduate Scholarship are Avery Davis of LaFayette High School, Rihanna Davis of Walker LAUNCH College and Career Academy, and Amaya McDermott of Ridgeland High School. The scholarship is awarded annually to one senior from each public high school and college and career academy within GNTC’s nine-county service area.
The scholarships are intended to help graduating seniors continue their education and workforce training through programs offered at GNTC.
Avery Davis, a resident of LaFayette, was selected to represent LaFayette High School, while Chickamauga resident Rihanna Davis earned the scholarship representing Walker LAUNCH College and Career Academy. Rossville resident Amaya McDermott was recognized as the scholarship recipient from Ridgeland High School.
The Foundation’s High School Graduate Scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated academic achievement and a commitment to pursuing higher education and career development opportunities.
In addition to supporting students financially, the scholarship program helps strengthen the workforce pipeline throughout northwest Georgia by encouraging graduates to continue their education close to home.
Walker County also has strong representation on the GNTC Foundation Board of Trustees. Current trustees from Walker County include Luther Ingram, Walker County Schools Superintendent Damon Raines, and Doris White, who help support the Foundation’s mission of providing educational opportunities for students throughout the region.
GNTC serves a nine-county area in northwest Georgia and offers technical education, workforce training and degree programs designed to prepare students for careers in a variety of high-demand fields.
College officials said the scholarships represent an investment not only in the students receiving them, but also in the future workforce and economic growth of the communities they call home.
