     A portion of North Nickajack Road in Walker County will be temporarily closed today for road work.  The closure will be near John Thompson Road.  Drivers can detour to Chattanooga Valley Road using Eagle Cliff Road.
     Early voting begins Tuesday in Walker County for the November third election.  Voters will decide three proposed amendments to the Georgia Constitution, along with a local referendum on senior homestead exemptions  The first amendment would increase the acreage limit for family farmland qualifying for conservation-use tax treatment from two-thousand to four-thousand acres.  The second would make probate judge elections nonpartisan.  The third would create constitutional protection for funding dedicated to Georgia’s 9-1-1 system.  Locally, the referendum would provide a 50-thousand-dollar school tax homestead exemption for homeowners age 70 and older, and a full exemption for those 75 and older who meet residency requirements.  Early voting begins Tuesday at the Walker County Elections Office on South Main Street in LaFayette and continues through October 30. Additional locations will open October 24.
     Governor Brian Kemp is giving Georgia truckers and farmers more relief.  Kemp has suspended state penalties for selling, delivering or using off-road, dyed diesel in on-road vehicles.  The state motor fuel tax remains suspended. Weight limits for commercial vehicles are also lifted.  The state of emergency has now been extended through November fifth.  AAA says Georgia gas prices have dropped about 33 cents a gallon in the past week. Diesel is down more than 42 cents.
     Georgia’s week-long primitive weapons deer season begins Saturday.  Most hunters are limited to muzzleloaders and archery equipment.  But hunters under 16 can use any legal deer firearm during the season.  Nearly 11-thousand deer were harvested during the season last year.
     The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is looking for volunteers.  Volunteers help at the park’s two visitor centers. They welcome guests, answer questions and share information about the park.  Volunteers must be at least 22. A weekly or bi-weekly, four-hour shift is preferred.  If you’re interested, visit Volunteer.gov and search for Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.
     Georgia Northwestern Technical College is hosting an Adult Education Open House next Wednesday.  The event runs from noon to three p.m. at the Walker County Campus in Rock Spring.  Prospective students can learn about GED and HiSET programs, the Youth Success Academy and career training opportunities.  The open house is Wednesday, October 14, at the GNTC Walker County Campus.
     The LaFayette High School girls volleyball team takes on Ringgold today in the Region semifinals.  The match will be played at Dan Priest Arena at LaFayette High School, following the five p.m. match, with first serve expected around seven.  It’s a best-of-five match, and tickets are six dollars.
